Dell's No Longer the No. 1 PC Laptop Maker

Dell no longer dominates the personal computer laptop market, according to a new report.

PC-world.com, a website owned by PC World, reports that research firm Gartner said that Dell was the top PC laptop manufacturer in the first quarter of this year, and that it also ranked as the world's number one personal computer vendor in the first quarter.

"Dell's continued strength in the domestic market belies its struggles in markets outside of the U.S., with sales in Europe slowing and that in Asia taking a sharp downward turn," said Debra Aho Williamson, principal analyst at Gartner.

Dell's dominance in the United States has been striking and due to a number of factors. About 90 percent of Dell's sales are laptops, and in 2007 the company surpassed Compaq to become the world's largest PC maker.

Anand Sanwal, an analyst at Gartner, believes that a large part of Dell's success can be traced to the release of the XPS 13 in 2007. The XPS 13 came out around the same time as Apple's MacBook Air, and it is the smallest Windows-based laptop on the market.

"If the product strategy is effective, and we think it is, Dell can play an important role in defining the market and contributing to the growth of the PC industry going forward. It will allow other PC makers to differentiate their offerings further based on their ability to offer hardware with more features and greater functionality at attractive prices," Sanwal said.

But the company isn't without its weaknesses. The XPS 13, for one, is a hard sell among consumers. The price of the XPS 13 starts at $900, while the Air ranges from $1,299 to $1,799.

And Dell's strength has been largely focused on the consumer markets. Businesses aren't buying as many laptops as they used to. Dell's revenue from businesses dropped 8 percent last year.

"We've seen an especially dramatic rise in netbook shipments over the past year, and we expect the market to continue to grow. The mix of higher-priced notebooks and lower-priced netbooks will continue to shift over the course of this year," Sanwal said.

Dell, which includes the Acer brand, shipped 8.3 million laptops in the first quarter.
