foobar2000 uses its own mixdown code (MXD) in place of the generic WDM (wave device) interface supplied by DirectShow.
DirectShow is a Microsoft API that is often used by software development applications, and it allows applications to access and control media hardware and software devices.
foobar2000 has no control over the hardware. In fact the main use of foobar2000 is the ability to perform it's own mixdown of your wave files, and convert them to a format that the hardware can use. If you want to add surround to your wave files foobar2000 is probably the wrong solution for you.
