In 1988 Autodesk released AutoCAD 8, which was based on the System 8 operating system. The development platform was based on the commercial variant of Lisp, called AutoLISP. Although AutoLISP was not as widely used as the Lisp dialect of Unix, like LISP, it was equally powerful and allowed programmers to create their own packages and macros.

AutoLISP was not very popular, and after only a year Autodesk switched to the Visual LISP, which was based on the Java programming language. The price of Visual LISP was much lower than AutoLISP and the company received many orders.

The first public release of AutoCAD for Windows was AutoCAD 4, which was based on Microsoft's.NET platform and ran on the Windows 3.1 operating system.
